Your garage door safety sensors are one of the most critical components of your door system. Located on either side of the door opening, about 6 inches from the ground, these sensors use an infrared beam to detect obstacles in the door's path.
At Andover Garage Doors, our certified technicians handle sensor issues daily, and we've compiled everything you need to know about keeping your sensors properly calibrated.
Properly calibrated sensors ensure: - Safety: The door will reverse if something or someone is in the way - Reliability: Prevents false triggers and random reversals - Compliance: Meets federal safety requirements established in 1993
1. Door reverses for no reason - If your door starts closing then immediately reverses without any visible obstruction, your sensors may be misaligned.
2. Blinking LED lights - Most sensors have indicator lights. A steady light usually means proper alignment, while blinking indicates a problem.
3. Door won't close at all - Complete sensor failure will prevent the door from closing entirely.
Step 1: Clean the Sensors Start by cleaning both sensor lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Dust, dirt, and cobwebs can block the infrared beam.
Step 2: Check the Alignment Both sensors should be pointing directly at each other. You can use a level to ensure they're at the same height.
Step 3: Tighten the Mounting Brackets Loose brackets are a common cause of sensor problems. Secure both sensors firmly in place.
Step 4: Test the System With the door open, place an object in the sensor's path and try to close the door. It should reverse immediately.
While basic calibration is DIY-friendly, contact a professional if: - The sensors are physically damaged, Wiring appears frayed or corroded, Problems persist after calibration, You're uncomfortable working with electrical components
At Andover Garage Doors, our technicians are experts at sensor diagnostics and repair. We carry replacement sensors for all major brands and can typically complete repairs in a single visit.
